MACKINAC CITY, Mich. (WWJ) - The Mackinac Bridge was closed by authorities after dangerous weather conditions threatened drivers traveling between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas Thursday Wednesday morning.

According to 9&10 News out of Traverse City, the Mackinac City Police Department said the closure was due to "falling ice." It is unknown how long the bridge will remain closed as temperatures are expected to stay warm and thaw out ice still settled on the top of the bridge.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority announced the icy conditions around 11 a.m. Thursday morning on Twitter, prompting the closure. Drivers were told to slow their speed to 20 mph when approaching the bridge and be prepared to stop; authorities said personnel on both sides would assist drivers with further instructions.

"The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring conditions at various points along the structure," officials said on their website. "When conditions improve, the bridge will be reopened to traffic."
