HARRISON TWP. (WWJ) — A group of boaters who had planned on spending their Sunday fishing on Lake St. Clair had to be rescued by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division.

The sheriff’s office On Tuesday shared video showing the rescue, which happened around 3 p.m. on June 23 about a mile east of the mouth of the Clinton River near Harrison Township.

Two patrol boats with the Marine Division responded after getting reports of a capsized vessel with four people in the water who were all wearing life jackets and hanging onto the boar.

The water was “very choppy” on Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office and waves began coming over the gunwale into their boat. Water entered the compartments and would not drain, causing it to flip over.

Officials said the marine deputies were able to navigate the rough waters and rescue all four boaters quickly and safely.

“This group of boaters made the best decision possible when they chose to wear life jackets on their outing,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said, per a press release. “I sincerely appreciate the efforts of our Marine Division rescuing these individuals and ensuring they made it safely back to shore.”

Officials are reminding boaters to perform a vessel check before going out on the water. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary has a checklist to make sure your vessel is water ready.
