MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - Students who attend one Macomb County school district will get an extra day to their weekend after classes were canceled for Friday, but not for a reason you'd expect.
Officials for the Van Dyke Public Schools said all nine of their schools will be closed Dec. 9 due to "too many illnesses going around to safely and healthily run our buildings."
The affected schools are as follows:
• Van Dyke Public Schools
• Lincoln High School
• Lincoln Middle School
• Carlson Elementary
• Lincoln Elementary
• McKinley Elementary
• CTE/SMTEC Consortium
• Kennedy Early Childhood Center
• Success Academy
Superintendent Piper Bognar sent a message to parents and students on Thursday with the decision to cancel classes for Friday in order to give students extra time to recover.
"It's definitely December in Michigan," Bognar wrote. "Please get some rest this weekend and stay safe."
Officials said while students are out of the buildings, all nine schools and centers will be thoroughly cleaned and ready for classes on Monday.
