Macomb Township firefighter continues 140 mile walk across Michigan for cancer awareness

MACOMB TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- One local firefighter is nearing the end of a very important journey across the state of Michigan.

For the third year, Joseph Warne is walking 140 miles from Macomb Township to Grand Rapids to raise funds for firefighters who are impacted by cancer.

Warne uses the #WalkForTheRed140 event to highlight the fact that the leading cause of death among firefighters is cancer, due in part to inhaling chemicals and fumes in burning buildings.

The Macomb Township-native, who runs the charity Neighbors United, set out Thursday morning for his long trek, throughout which he will don his 65-pound firefighters uniform.

As he makes his way to Cascade Township, Warne made a stop at the 9/11 memorial ceremony happening in Lansing on Saturday.

Warne set out on the final leg of his journey Sunday morning.

He posted several Facebook Live videos from the Neighbors United Facebook page.

Families of fallen firefighters, as well as colleagues and other walkers, will join Warne on his venture, which he is hoping to expand to other states in years to come.
