MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- Madison Heights firefighters are investigating the cause of the three-alarm fire that destroyed a two-story commercial building and required mutual aid from six other fire departments late Sunday night.

The two employees at Skyline screen printing and embroidery in Madison Heights were in the building at 32046 Edward St., southeast of 14 Mile and John R roads, when they began to smell smoke and called 911, according to what Madison Heights Fire Chief Greg Lelito told The Oakland Press.

Lelito said the employees called at 11:35 p.m saying they smelled smoke and then discovered the rear area of the building filled with smoke.

“When we got there flames were coming out of the roof,” Lelito said.

A back wall at the 20,000-square foot buisness collapsed first.

Despite firefighters arriving at the building within four minutes of the 911 call, they still found themselves dealing with hot spots and cleanup at the site on Monday morning.

The business works with garments, does embroidery work and touts itself as one of the largest automated textile screen printing operations in the U.S.

"A special shout-out to Madison Heights Department of Public Services for their assistance fueling our trucks on scene several times throughout the night and Madison Heights Police Department for their assistance with traffic and scene control," said Madison Heights firefighters.

Both employees got out of the building safely and no one was injured.
