UPDATE: This situation ended peacefully late Monday night with a 46-year-old man in custody after barricading himself in his home with his family.

(WWJ) — Madison Heights and Royal Oak police officials are asking residents in the neighborhood near Bishop Foley High School to stay inside as they deal with "an ongoing police situation."

The police department issued an alert around 6:30 p.m. Monday telling the public to avoid the area of Campbell and Whitcomb — in the area of 14 Mile and Stevenson — and said anyone who lives in the area should stay inside.

Bishop Foley High School officials confirmed to WWJ the incident does not involve the school, which is at the intersection of Campbell and Whitcomb, but is in the surrounding neighborhood that lies on the border of the two cities.

Royal Oak police officials have also said they were responding to the scene, but offered no further details.

Police officials have not released any further information about the nature of the incident.

"There will be a second message sent out when the area is clear," the MHPD alert said.

It was not clear how long the police situation was expected to last.
