MEMPHIS, Mich. (WWJ) -- A 32-year-old man is jailed and is awaiting expected charges in the murder of a 65-year-old man at an apartment complex in northern Macomb County.

It happened Tuesday night, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, in the village of Memphis, which straddles the border between Macomb and St. Clair counties.

Deputies responded at around 10:45 p.m. when the Memphis Police Department asked for help investigating a homicide on Henderson St., where a 65-year-old man was found dead in an apartment.

The cause of death was blunt force trauma with health complications, officials said.

A second man, age 32, had already been taken into custody as a suspect in the slaying.

Following further investigation, deputies learned that the two men knew one another, and both of them lived in the complex.

The area was canvassed for possible witnesses and evidence, one witness telling investigators that he heard yelling coming from the apartment earlier in the evening.

It was also discovered, the sheriff's office said, that the suspect who was arrested was the person who made the initial 911 call, at around 9:40 p.m.

The suspect was taken to the Macomb County Jail where he is being held without bond.

A motive for the killing is unknown, as the sheriff's office noted that this remain an active investigation.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to to Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine charges.

No names were released.

Editors note: WWJ initially reported that the two men were neighbors. Later, police clarified that the men shared one apartment, although they were not related and were not in a relationship.
