NEW HAVEN (WWJ) -- A young man from Canada was arrested after an alleged theft and a foot chase that prompted school lockdowns in Macomb County on Wednesday.

At around 2 p.m. Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Metro Pawn on Gratiot Ave. in New Haven on a report about a man who stole a firearm.

The suspect, identified as a 24-year-old Ontario man, ran off with the gun before deputies arrived, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies chased the man for a short time, before taking him into custody.

As a precaution, the nearby New Haven Elementary and New Haven High School were placed on a soft lockdown at the time of the incident. The lockdown was lifted, and students were released for the day.

No injuries were reported.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said, "Sheriff Wickersham commends the outstanding efforts of the dispatchers and deputies involved in this incident."

The suspect's name has not been released, pending an arraignment.
