Detroit police: man busted for illegally selling fireworks out of U-Haul van

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police are issuing a warning to the public this Fourth of July weekend:

Don’t illegally sell fireworks.

The Detroit Police Department says their bomb squad confiscated about 500 lbs. of fireworks from a man who was selling them out of a U-Haul van near 8 Mile Road and Fleming Street on the city’s east side.

There were about $25,000 worth of fireworks in the van, according to police.

The man was ticketed, but police did not specify how much the ticket was.

Police noted “they’re on the lookout” this weekend.

Many Michiganders will be shooting off fireworks in celebration of Independence Day this weekend, but officials are reminding them to do so safely and within the time restrictions of the state law -- between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m., through July 4.
