(WWJ) – A man has been arrested after being found with a gun when Michigan State Police busted up a drag race in Northern Michigan.
Around 11 p.m. Saturday a trooper from the Traverse City post spotted two cars drag racing on US-31 near South Airport Road, just south of the city in Garfield Township.
When the trooper turned on his emergency lights, both cars – a Ford Mustang and a BMW sedan – slowed down, but didn’t stop. They eventually turned onto Silver Pines Road off of US-31 and the Mustang stopped.
But officials say the BMW then sped away, fleeing the scene.
The man behind the wheel of the Mustang said he didn’t know the other driver. The BMW was later found parked in the area by another trooper.
The BMW driver, a 26-year-old Traverse City man, was found to be in possession of a 40 Caliber Glock Model 27. Authorities say he didn’t have a permit to carry the pistol concealed and it was not registered.
The driver, whose name was not released, was arrested and held at the Grand Traverse County Jail pending arraignment.
MSP officials did not say whether either driver will face charges for the alleged drag racing. It was not clear how fast the cars were going prior to the traffic stop.
