
DEXTER TOWNSHIP (WWJ) — A Dexter man who has been charged with exposing himself to a woman on a natural trail in Washtenaw County is also under investigation for a string of similar crimes in the area, officials announced Wednesday morning.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said they were investigating a series of unsolved crimes concerning indecent exposure and attempted home invasion in the area when they were alerted to a new incident on Sunday, June 19.
A woman called and told police she was hiking along the Border-to-Border Trail in Dexter Township around 10 a.m. when she was approached by a man from behind.
The woman claimed the man exposed himself and tried to keep her from leaving the trail.
She was able break away and get to safety where she alerted police. Deputies near the area were able to quickly locate and arrest the suspect based on the woman's description.
The WCSO said the man, identified 37-year-old Isaiah Matthew Hopkins, was arraigned on a charge of aggravated indecent exposure is being held on a $50,000 cash bond at the Washtenaw County Jail.
According to the sheriff's office, other information revealed during the investigation of the suspect linked Hopkins to other indecent exposure cases and home invasions in and around Dexter.
As reported by WXYZ, one case of home invasion being investigated by police in the area saw a suspect successfully break into a woman's house while she was asleep.
Cornell said she discovered the screen on her backdoor had been cut sometime last week.
"I saw my screen door halfway open which I knew I had locked it the night before," said Betty Cornell told WXYZ.
Authorities said they are pursing active investigations into these cases with the information they have discovered; any updates will be shared as they become available.
No other information was released by police.
