(WWJ) Initially, he was accused only of credit card fraud.

Now a Michigan man faces 16 criminal charges, and up to life in prison, after it's alleged he set a booby trap in his home for police.

The investigation began back on Jan. 19 when the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post got a call about a fraud complaint in Ogemaw County. The victim was from Merritt, police said, and reported that her credit card was used to buy over $1,500 worth of items from a Walmart store in West Branch.

MSP was able to identify the suspect as 67-year-old Roger Allan Broadstone from Twining, a Village located northeast of Standish.

On Jan. 20, troopers went to Broadstone's home to interview him, and he refused to come out, police said.

He spoke with them through an open widow and said they would need a search warrant to come inside and speak with him.

Returning a little later with the warrant, troopers found that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the house.

Troopers then entered the home to find that Broadstone "set up a booby trap and made other preparations to harm troopers," MSP said.

While police have not described the alleged trap and other prep, the long list of charges faced by Broadstone do offer some clues.

Broadstone was arraigned in the 81st District Court in Arenac County on Monday on the following: Five counts of attempted murder, one count of disarming police officer - non-firearm, one count of attempt to disarm police officer - firearm, four counts of assault/resisting and obstructing police, one count assault/resisting and obstructing police causing injury, one count placing offensive substance with intent to injure, one count arson preparation to bum a dwelling, one count weapons — ammunition possession by felon, and one count malicious destruction of police property.

His bond was set at $1,125,000, police said,

Troopers were assisted by the Arenac County Sheriff's Office.
