PORT HURON TWP. (WWJ) -- The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office is searching for a suspect in what appears to be an attempted child abduction in Port Huron Twp.
Investigators say a 9-year-old boy was playing outside with friends near the Brookstone Place Apartment last Friday when he began to head home, at around 6 p.m.
That's when the boy said a stranger in a white utility van pulled up, got out, and offered him candy. The man then tried to grab the boy, police said, and when the child took of running the man chased him.
After awhile, the man stopped chasing the child, returned to his van and left the area.
Authorities alerted the public about the incident on Tuesday.
"The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office takes all calls for services seriously, but there is another level of concern when a child is involved," the sheriff's office said, describing the incident in a social media post.
The suspect described as a white male in his 40s, around 6 feet tall, with brown hair, brown eyes, a big nose and a deep voice.
He was wearing a black ski mask that left his face visible, and his hair was hanging out of it, police said. The suspect was dressed in a shiny black shirt with a pocket on the front and black silky pants with no pockets.
The white van had no distinct markings.
Anyone who saw something in the area of the Brookstone Place Apartments during the time of the incident, or has any information that may be helpful with this investigation is asked to call Det. Fajardo at 810-987-1726.
The sheriff's office added: "We are asking that residents take this time to review with their children what to do if a stranger approaches them. It may be helpful to review calling 9-1-1 also."
