OAKLAND TWP. (WWJ) -- Oakland County investigators say an elderly man has died after crashing a classic car into a tree over the weekend.

The crash happened at around 4:15 p.m. Saturday, along E. Romeo Road, east of Rochester Road in Oakland Township.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, 77-year-old Clifford Gilbert Finkle Jr. of Bruce Township was driving a 1966 Chevrolet eastbound on Romeo when the car left the roadway and hit a tree.

Finkle had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he died of his injuries on Monday.

According to the OCSO, excessive speed is believed to be a factor, and it's not known if alcohol or drug use were also involved.

The incident remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit.

No one else was hurt.
