MARQUETTE (WWJ) -- Tragedy struck over Labor Day weekend in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

A man died after falling from a cliff at Presque Isle Park in Marquette on Monday.

Witnesses called police just after 1 p.m. on Monday after seeing the man plummet from an observation deck on the east side of the park.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered the man unresponsive in Lake Superior, close to the shoreline.

After first responders attempted to resuscitate him, the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information suggests he was climbing down the cliff to take photos when he fell.

According to police, the man was visiting the area, but they are not releasing his name or his hometown at this time.
