DETROIT (WWJ) - One man is dead after police confirmed he was stabbed at a Detroit homeless shelter on Friday night.

Detroit Police Department's Cpl. Dan Donakowski told WWJ that the fatal incident occurred in the 14300 block of Kercheval Avenue close to Chalmers Street, at the St. John Community Center.

Details leading up to the stabbing remain unclear at this time with police still actively investigating. FOX 2 reported a police presence at the homeless shelter for over an hour and a half.

Darrell Bright, a resident at the shelter, told FOX 2 that the victim had recently moved in.

Bright said he was sleeping when the stabbing happened, but was woken up by police and told he needed to leave the building.

"They said the guy was dead. They said he got stabbed seven times in the back – so they put us all out. So we're all standing out here now until the investigation is over."

Donakowski said one person was arrested in connection to the incident. No other information was released.
