BERRIEN SPRINGS (WWJ) – A man is dead after kayakers found him in a river Saturday morning in Southwest Michigan.

Police were called around 8:40 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of an overturned canoe in the St. Joseph River near Berrien Springs, according to a report from MLive.

Several hours later kayakers on the river found a dead body near an island down river of where the canoe was found, according to the report.

The body of 47-year-old Timothy Johns of Berrien Springs was turned over to the medical examiner’s office to conduct an autopsy.

Authorities say there were no signs of people in the area where Johns was found, but investigators recovered several pieces of property at the scene that were believed to have been in the canoe when it overturned, according to MLive.
