PORT HURON (WWJ) — Police in Port Huron are asking for tips as they investigate a man’s death and a suspected arson nearby early Wednesday morning.

It all unfolded around 12:15 a.m. on Jan. 29, according to the Port Huron Police Department. Officers were called to Vanness Street, near an elementary school, on reports of a car fire.

When police showed up they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. About 15 minutes later officers were called to a nearby house on Vanness, where a 35-year-old man was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, police officials identified the victim as 35-year-old Vincent Buckles.

While authorities say preliminary findings showed the car fire may have been arson, investigators are still working to determine whether the shooting and fire are connected.

In the afternoon update, officials said investigators are “actively pursuing multiple leads and utilizing every resource available to bring justice to this horrible murder of one of our residents.”

Officials are asking anyone who knows something about Buckles’ death or the fire to come forward. Those with information can contact the Port Huron Police Department at 810-984-8415 or the PHPD’s Major Crimes Unit at 810-984-5383.
