DETROIT (WWJ) -- A man is dead after he was seen walking in the middle of the Southfield Freeway.
Michigan State Police said a call came it at around after 11 p.m. Monday about a pedestrian on the freeway near 9 Mile Rd. in Detroit.
More 911 calls then came in, reporting that the man was lying in the center lane.
MSP said investigators determined that the man was hit by a car when he was trying to cross the freeway on foot — walking from the right shoulder into the lanes of traffic — then was hit by several more vehicles.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police said the man was not carrying any ID.
“Troopers are continuing their investigation into the identity of the pedestrian,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw. “We want to remind members of our community to not walk on the freeway or get out of their cars if your vehicle becomes disabled or you are in a crash. Stay in your vehicle and wear your seatbelt.”
The driver who first hit the man did stop and the scene, but police said the others who hit the man did not.
The Medical Examiner's Office is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
