WHITE LAKE (WWJ) -- The death of an elderly Independence Township man in a boat crash Sunday is under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say 81-year-old Dan Erwin Campbell was piloting a 27-foot ice sailboat on the eastern most part of Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, in White Lake Township, just before noon when he crash about 100 yards from the shore.

It's not clear at the time what led to the crash, the sheriff's office said, but it's believed that Campbell hit his head on the ice.

Campbell, who was wearing a helmet and face shield, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

No one else was hurt.

The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was called to assist the White Lake Township Police and Fire, which took the call about the crash.

Iceboating is a winter sport involving sailing on ice in modified boats. An iceboat is basically a sailboat that travels on thin blades, or runners, on the surface of the ice.

Sunday evening, officials said the investigation into this incident was still ongoing.
