ALLEN PARK (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway Downriver, after deadly freeway crash overnight.
Westbound I-94 was closed at M-39 in Allen Park, following the crash at around 12:30 a.m.
According to Michigan State Police, a 64-year-old man driving a pickup truck rear-ended a gravel hauler that was parked on the shoulder with mechanical issues.
The pickup driver, from Dearborn Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene.
MSP said the investigation into how this happened is ongoing.
“Currently, it is unknown why the pick up driver ended up driving on the shoulder,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. “Once medical examiner reports and other evidence is examined, we may have a better idea as of why.”
The westbound freeway was closed for cleanup into the morning commute, but all lanes have since reopened.
