Man struck, killed on I-96 Outer Drive ramp after leaving vehicle involved in earlier crash; MSP investigating

DETROIT (WWJ) - Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal crash on westbound I-96’s Outer Drive ramp.

At 12:35 a.m. on Saturday, Michigan State Troopers responded to calls regarding a one car crash. The vehicle was reported to be on the shoulder of westbound I-96.

A man was found lying on the roadway of the Outer Drive ramp when authorities searched for the initial crash, according to a Tweet from the MSP Second District.

Troopers administered first aid to the man before he was transported to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead after arriving.

The investigation found that the man on the ramp was part of the crash that was initially reported.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle and 41-year-old passenger, from Detroit, got out of the vehicle after the crash and began walking up the Outer Drive ramp.

A passing car struck the passenger while driving up the ramp. The driver of the vehicle stopped after hitting the man, according to the Tweet.

“We want to remind everyone to stay in your vehicle if involved in a crash or a breakdown on the freeway,” F/Lt Mike Shaw said. “If you can't move off the freeway, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened and call 911. This is your safest option.”

The investigation is pending medical examiner reports and blood results, according to the MSP Second District Tweet.
