FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) -- A robbery suspect lit his cousin and her girlfriend on fire in Detroit after they wanted to report the crime to police.
The body of Deashia Gilkey and her girlfriend were found in a burning vehicle on Detroit's east side on Feb. 4.
According to Fox 2 Detroit, police said they were able to connect the double-murder to a robbery at Fairmont Park Apartments in Farmington Hills that happened on the same day.
Police said Gilkey and her cousin, Jeremy Taylor, robbed a man at the complex. Her girlfriend and another man were also there.
Detroit Police Lt. Robert LaLone told Fox 2 that Gilkey was nervous after the robbery and wanted to confess to police about the crime.
In an effort to allegedly stop her from telling authorities, Taylor shot and killed Gilkey and her girlfriend near a relative's house and then drove them over to the location where the car and the two inside were lit on fire.
The two bodies were found after firefighters responded to reports that a building was on fire at the 14600 block of Young around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, reported The Detroit News
Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said fire crews arrived on scene to find a car ablaze behind a one-story home. Once the flames were extinguished, firefighters discovered the charred remains of two victims inside the vehicle.
LaLone told Fox 2 that with the help of license plate readers and shot spotter technology, they were able to piece together what lead to the deaths. A family member told police what happened, as well.
Investigators were able to later track down Taylor -- who was in Kentucky.
