WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) A shooting at and around a West Bloomfield apartment complex left two people hospitalized, police said.

West Bloomfield Police said it happened on Saturday, February 21, just before 9 a.m.-- and centered around the Thornberry Apartment Complex in the area of Maple and Farmington. They received a call from a resident who said another resident was attempting to break into his unit with an object that looked like a stick.

About four minutes later, dispatchers received a call from a person who identified themselves as a family member of an employee of the Maple View Liquor Store, located about a half mile away from the complex. The caller explained the employee had been shot, and was driving himself to the hospital.

Officers went to both the hospital to speak with the victim and to the apartment complex. As they were en route, dispatchers received multiple calls from residents who heard shots fired in the area.

Authorities said officers arrested the suspect after he exited his vehicle with a rifle. He eventually dropped the weapon and complied.

The victims included a woman who resided at the apartment complex, and a man who worked at the liquor store. The woman is hospitalized with non-fatal injuries. The man is now on life support, police said.

The suspect is receiving treatment for a medical episode he experienced while in custody.

The motive for the shooting is unknown. It's also unclear if the victims and the suspect knew one another.

West Bloomfield Police said there is no ongoing danger to the community.
