Suspect arrested after beating, running, killing over man at Detroit gas station: police

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A suspect has been arrested for what police are calling a heinous act at a Detroit gas station.

Police said a man was killed early Tuesday morning when he was run over after a struggle with a carjacker who was trying to steal his Jeep at a gas station at Joy and Greenfield on the city's west side.

At around 4:30 a.m., police said the victim was coming out of the gas station, at Joy and Greenfield on the west side, and saw the suspect in his vehicle.

According to Detroit Police Capt. Marcus Thirkill, there was a fight and then the suspect ran over the victim with the Jeep before taking off.

Witnesses helped police track down the suspext.

"We are thankful for the witnesses. We are thankful for the person that notified the Detroit Police Department," Thirkill told reporters.

"And, you know, we continue to ask everyone in the community: If you see something, say something. But I just want to commend the officers from the Michigan State Police, the Detroit Police Department and the Dearborn Police Department for their fast response to this situation and removing this violent individual of the city streets."

Police said they do believe this was a random attack.

No names are being released at this time, with charges pending.

The investigation is ongoing.
