LIVONIA (WWJ) -- Livonia Police say a 61-year old man is dead after he was shot by an officer who was responding to an explosion and fire at a home.
Many questions remain after the shooting that happened Sunday evening outside a home on St. Francis Street, near Eight Mile Rd. and Grand River, just east of Inkster Rd.
According to Livonia Police, emergency crews responded to a call about a fire at the home, at around 7 p.m.
There is damage visible to the home, including to the roof, WWJ's Charlie Langton reported from the scene.
After the fire was put out, officers searched the home and found no one inside.
While checking the area, officers spotted the homeowner with a gun in a backyard, according to police.
Officers tried to get the man to put the gun down, but he instead he allegedly pointed it at officers, and that's when he was shot and killed.
No officers were hurt.
Michigan State Police have been called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
The Livonia Fire Department is investigating the cause of the explosion and fire, after signs of a possible arson were found, police said.
