WAYNE (WWJ) – A man who was shot by police outside the Ford Wayne Stamping plant over the weekend has died.
Wayne police officials said Monday 53-year old Zachery Polk succumbed to his injuries following life-saving surgical efforts at the hospital.
Polk, 53, is a Michigan native but had been living in Ohio, according to Wayne police.
Wayne police officers were called to the plant on Van Born around 7:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a man with a gun. He was allegedly trying to get into the plant when officers showed up.
One officer fired a shot and hit Polk after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers, officials said over the weekend.
Polk may have been suffering a mental health emergency at the time of the shooting, according to the preliminary investigation.
Michigan State Police have taken over the investigation, which is normal procedure whenever Wayne police are involved in a shooting.
