DETROIT (WWJ) - Police said a man has been hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle when he tried to run from an earlier crash.
Police said they were called to a crash involving a Dodge Ram pickup truck rear-ending a large box truck on southbound Southfield Freeway near Tireman Avenue in Detroit. The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 24.
While police were on their way to the crash, reports came in that a pedestrian was down in the northbound lanes of the Southfield Freeway.
An early investigation found that the driver of the pickup truck attempted to run from the crash after rear-ending the box truck. While crossing the northbound lanes, he was hit by a vehicle, police said.
The 49-year-old driver, from Detroit, was taken to a nearby hospital. He was listed in serious, but stable condition, police said.
"Two things we see often, hit and run crashes and people trying to cross the freeway," F/Lt Mike Shaw said. "If you are involved in a crash, just stop and identify yourself. If your crash is on the freeway, don't try to walk across traffic. It is too dangerous."
The pickup truck driver was cited for hit and run, failure to stop in assured clear distance and no operator's license, police said. The driver of the vehicle that hit him made a statement at the scene and was released.
