QUINCY (WWJ) -- A man who defied state shutdown orders in 2020 to keep his southern Michigan diner open died last week due to complications from COVID-19.

In September, John Parney, 62, was admitted to a hospital with COVID-19.

After being discharged from the hospital and returning home, he quickly developed significant health problems that put him in the hospital, again.

After more than a two-month battle with the virus, he died on Dec. 14.

Parney operated the Quincy Diner in Branch County's village of Quincy and kept the restaurant open in December 2020 when state officials banned dine-in business.

Parney kept the restaurant open and said at the time his wife had colon cancer so they needed the income.
