YPSILANTI (WWJ) - An 18-year-old wanted for sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in Ypsilanti last month was taken into custody over the holiday weekend, officials said.
The City of Ypsilanti Police Department confirmed that Andrew Najib Jimenes Vasquez, 18, was arrested on July 3 with the help of LAWNET and East Michigan University Police detectives in connection to a violent incident reported last Monday.
While few details about the case were released by authorities, Vasquez was identified as a suspect in a sexual assault and strong-arm robbery on June 25 by police.
According to authorities, the 18-year-old allegedly followed a woman, sexually assaulted and robbed her in the 1100 block of Washtenaw Avenue – just west of the Eastern Michigan University campus.
On July 2, police released information about Vasquez in order to help with their search and the following day, he was located due to the vigilant eye of the public.
"We would like to thank the Ypsilanti community for providing tips that ultimately lead to Vasquez's apprehension," the Ypsilanti PD said in an update.
No other details were released by authorities.
