DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Detroit Police Department is still working to determine what led to the deaths of three people after a grim discovery last week. Police Chief Todd Bettison said the remains of three people were found Thursday, Aug, 20, in a home on the city's northwest side.
"We launched our missing persons investigation, and discovered skeletal remains in the basement," Bettison told reporters.
Bettison said an investigation revealed that two of the bodies were those of a 14-year-old boy and his 50-year-old mother -- who appeared to be dead from a murder/suicide.
Speaking at a news conference Monday, Bettison said detectives are still working to piece together details of the tragic case.
"We believe that all three victims died of apparent gunshot wounds," Bettison said. "But we are still awaiting the Wayne County Medical Examiner's full report. Our investigation reveals that the victims may be all related."
Bettison said members of the family told police the father of the teen has not been heard from or seen in years, leading police to believe that the father could be the third person who was found dead.
However, that fact has not yet been confirmed.
It's unclear how long ago the people died, as the investigation continues.
No names or further details have yet been released.
