(WWJ) -- Just as school gets underway this fall, more Michigan counties will be requiring students to mask up in class.
On Thursday morning, the Washtenaw County Health Department issued a mask mandate for all K-12 schools.
In addition, a second order requires people in schools and other educational settings to isolate or quarantine as directed for illness or exposure to COVID-19.
School administrators say the county is at high transmission levels for the coronavirus and masks will help slow the spread.
The order takes effect in Washtenaw County schools next Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, health officials in Ingham County announced today they will also be issuing mask mandates and quarantine measures in educational settings in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
The mandate will include public and private schools, as well as daycare and childcare centers, preschools and youth programs.
"It is imperative that we use all of our tools and prevention strategies to control COVID-19 in educational settings to maintain in-person learning in the 2021-2022 school year and to do so safely," Ingham County Health Officer Linda S. Vail said in a statement.
The public health orders from Ingham County will go into effect beginning Tuesday at midnight.
