(WWJ) -- Nurses at McLaren Macomb Hospital appear to be heading towards a strike.
The union that represents the hospital’s nurses has given notice that it will strike on July 28 if McLaren doesn’t commit to improving working conditions.
Jeffrey Morawski, who is president of the Office of Professional Employees and International Union Local 40 and also a nurse at the hospital, says most of the problems stem from a shortage of nurses and other workers, such as nursing assistants.
According to Morawski, McLaren Macomb is supposed to have 600 nurses, but is currently about 70 short.
He says that means nurses are not only caring for more patients, they’re also providing more care.
A spokesperson for McLaren says they are disappointed that the union has issued a 10-day strike notice, and they are hoping to reach an agreement without a work stoppage before the contact expires.
