ROMULUS (WWJ) - Metro Airport is open and the FAA announcement that the airport is closed is regarding flights that would've been diverted to Detroit, officials said.
The FAA's website shows Metro Airport, DTW, is closed due to "delays exceeding 60 minutes."
"Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is open," Randy Wimbley, Metro Detroit Airport's Communications and Public Relations Manager, said in a written statement. "Earlier this evening, the aerodome was closed for approximately an hour due to severe weather. Our Airfield Operations and Maintenance crews are working around the clock to maintain our runways and taxiways. The message currently posted on the FAA website saying DTW is closed, is referring to flights that would otherwise be diverted to DTW."
WWJ received a call from a passenger whose flight was diverted to Pittsburgh. Jeff said he was told the airport was expected to reopen soon.
Officials say people flying out or having someone fly in to Metro Airport should check to make sure they have the most up-to-date information.
