(WWJ) – As if Metro Detroit didn’t already see enough rain on Thursday, more is making its way the area, and came packing a punch -- including Tornado Warnings in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties.

Tornado Warnings issued for parts of Wayne and Washtenaw Counties have expired, though Severe Thunderstorm Warnings remain in place in parts of Southeast Michigan.

After overnight downpours left parts of Metro Detroit severely flooded on Thursday – especially near Detroit Metro Airport – much of the area is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 1 a.m. Friday

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw, Livingston and Monroe Counties until 11:15 p.m.

The NWS said earlier in the day the storms could bring damaging wind gusts and heavy rain, which “could worsen flooding in areas that were hard hit last night.”

Wind gusts could reach up to 75 mph, according to the NWS, while there’s a possibility for hail up to an inch in diameter and maybe even an isolated tornado.

AccuWeather meteorologist John Feerick said earlier in the day storms would most likely start to “break out” after sunset, and right on cue parts of Southeast Michigan began seeing the rain fall and winds pick up

The second dose of severe weather in the last 24 hours, coupled with high heat indexes into the evening hours, caused many high school football games to be postponed, delayed or canceled on the first day of the season across the state.

Feerick says any storms that come our way “will be capable again of producing more flooding downpours, hail, damaging wind gusts, even an isolated tornado.”

He says things are expected to dry out by daybreak, with Friday’s high temperatures around 83 degrees. A thunderstorm is possible in some areas late Friday night before things become “more comfortable” for the weekend, with temperatures back in the 70s.
