DETROIT (WWJ) -- Gas prices are creeping even higher in Metro Detroit, up 11 cents overnight.
According to AAA-Michigan, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Michigan was $4.43, as of Tuesday morning.
Diesel users are now paying an average of $6.26 per gallon — which AAA says is a new state record.
It's possible to find gas for cheaper in a few spots, however, if you're willing to make the effort.
On Detroit's east side, WWJ's Charlie Langton found drivers lining up at Freedom Fuel Network, at Cadieux and Harper.
"There are only about 25 of them in the whole country; only one in the state of Michigan, and that would be the one in Detroit," Langton said.
As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the price of a gallon of regular gas at that station was way below the average, at $3.67 when paying with cash, or $3.77 with a credit card.
Three other stations on that corner were charging $3.89/$3.99, just trying to keep up.
Detroit resident "Tillman" told Langton that waiting in line was well worth it. "Naw, I'm straight on that, man. I need that 20 cents for real; 28 cents to be exact. For real," he said.
Launched earlier this year, Freedom Fuel Network attracted national attention when promoted by President Donald Trump for selling gas at heavily discounted rates — marketed as a patriotic, low-margin business.
Industry analysts, however, questioned the sustainability of that pricing. A lawsuit filed in August alleged that suppliers involved with the network provided millions of dollars worth of unpaid fuel to keep retail prices artificially low.
