Metro Detroit journalist Danny Fenster speaks to family after being held in Myanmar 5 weeks

Bryan Fenster tells WWJ the situation has been terrible and an emotional roller-coaster for the family

(WWJ) --  There has been another postponement in a court case involving metro Detroit journalist Danny Fenster, who is being held in Myanmar.

Fenster appeared briefly in court on Thursday morning, but his hearing was pushed back until July 15.

The Huntington Woods-native told a lawyer involved in the case to tell everyone he was doing okay.

Danny and his brother, Bryan — who has been leading the charge on the #BringDannyHome efforts — were able to speak to each other via phone on Tuesday.

Bryan Fenster told WWJ the situation has been terrible and an emotional roller-coaster for the family, but they continue to remain hopeful.

“Thankfully, I was able to talk to Danny last night…we’re fairly certain we’ll be able to talk to him every week or every other week,” Fenster told WWJ’s Tony Ortiz. “He seems to be doing well, all things considered. We were able to crack a few jokes, so that was important, because [it’s] further evidence he’s doing okay.”

“It was really great to hear his voice, first time in 37-38 days that we were able to exhale briefly before getting back to work here,” he added.

Despite the long road ahead, Bryan credits elected officials and the Huntington Woods community with keeping Danny’s name at the forefront through the #BringDannyHome movement.

“Success is him home, he’s not home yet, so this has not been successful,” Fenster told WWJ. “But it has in a sense that this community, this country, has lifted us up and and has carried this message and amplified it in a way that we could not do on our own.”

The latest development comes as the military government on Wednesday began releasing about 2,300 prisoners, including journalists and activists, the Associated Press reports.

Danny Fenster was arrested at an airport in Myanmar as he was getting ready to come home to see his family more than five weeks ago.
