DETROIT (WWJ) – As the war in Ukraine approaches the two-month mark, local law enforcement agencies are teaming up to help protect those in danger.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Detroit Police Department are donating 165 decommissioned bulletproof vests to Ukraine – joint efforts that officials say are meant to save lives.

The sheriff’s office is sending 15 expired vests, while the DPD is donating 150, officials announced at a press conference on Monday.

While the vests had been taken out of use and were going to be recycled, officials say they still work.

“Certainly, this is about saving lives, and at the end of the day, any way that we can do that in law enforcement, we want to do,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

The two departments are following the lead of many law enforcement agencies across the country -- including several others here in Metro Detroit -- in the “endeavor to assist those fighting for their freedom in Ukraine,” White said.

Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington said the idea came to the fore as news continues to roll in about "the mass killings that are going on for those that are defending their area."

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the 15 vests they’re donating used to be worn by the Wayne County Special Response Team and have been upgraded. He says they will “stop anything from a 9mm to a .45 caliber.” The department is also donating a dozen body armor plates that go inside the vests.
