DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Mexicantown Main Street Rebranding Campaign will kick off with a family-friendly celebration.
The Southwest Detroit Business Association announced the campaign’s first event will be ¡Viva Mexicantown! Fiesta on Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Visitors can expect to see live performances, a ceremony and family games during the free event.
Director of Mexicantown Main Street, José Maldonado, said there will be Caribbean, Halal, Italian and Mexican food available.
Officials said the campaign honors the vibrant heritage, culture and entrepreneurial spirit of Mexicantown.
The rebrand will feature almost 200 banners lining the more than 1.7 miles along W. Vernor Highway and Bagley Street that make up Main Street.
Maldonado said the design of the banners incorporates both Spanish and English. The intentional choice welcomes people who haven’t visited before and those who have long-standing roots in the community to come together.
Banners are currently being installed.
The campaign is also launching a website that will allow local businesses to let the public know about events coming up. People planning a visit to Mexicantown can also check out places to eat and shop through the website, which can be found here.
