"This morning the MICHELIN Guide is announcing the launch of the MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes edition, which will include six culinary destinations of Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh," said Gwendal Poullennec International Director of the MICHELIN Guide during a virtual news briefing.
The guide represents the best of the best dining recommendations across the region, Poullennec said. Inspectors are already in the cities, making dining reservations and scouting for culinary gems.
This marks the first time Detroit’s culinary community will be evaluated by inspectors and in consideration for MICHELIN Star restaurants.
"We are beyond thrilled to spotlight our city and our region in this new MICHELIN Guide edition, "said Claude Molinari, President and CEO of Visit Detroit. "Detroit is a culinary destination on the rise and the recognition officially puts us on the map as a serious food city. Our culinary scene was built on authenticity, diversity and affordability and is a story that is still being written.
Molinari touted Greektown and Mexicantown as well as one of the largest middle eastern food scenes in the USA. He also talked about Detroit-style pizza, coney dogs, shawarma and street food.
He used the announcement to highlight work for current and future chefs and said many restaurants are locally sourcing food.
"Being included in the newest MICHELIN guide as a momentous culinary city is another validation of our destination," Molinari said. In addition, global trends show destinations included in the MICHELIN Guide see increased visitation, longer stays, and higher visitor spending.
The MICHELIN Guide has become an international benchmark in fine dining and the one, two and three MICHELIN Stars identify establishments serving exceptional cuisine that’s rich in flavor, remarkably executed and infused with the personality of a talented chef.
The full restaurant selection will be revealed next year at the MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes Ceremony, which will be announced at a later date.
Other areas in the U.S. that MICHELIN awards stars to include: New York City, San Francisco/Bay Area, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. Other rated regions include Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Colorado, Texas, and the American South.
