DETROIT (WWJ) - The mystery behind why giant blue numbers reading "06.06.24" were projected onto Michigan Central Station in Detroit overnight has finally been solved with officials announcing the date is when the historic building will reopen.

"We know Detroit and the world are eager to see how we've brought Michigan Central Station back to life," officials stated in a social media update on Tuesday, Feb. 20. "We are excited to show you the first glimpse of the station on June 6, 2024, as we celebrate its reopening."

The announcement came several hours after the illumination appeared on the old train station in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood and ignited speculation on social media.

Michigan Central Station was purchased by Ford Motor Company for $90 million in June 2018.

Prior to its purchase, it earned a reputation as one of Detroit's most notable eyesores as it sat decaying with busted out windows, peeling paint and a destroyed interior with graffiti -- and far cry from it's once grand status during the city's glory days.

But for the last six years, Ford has been transforming the station into a new mobility innovation hub that will not only serve as a key working place for the future of the auto industry, but a gathering place for the community, complete with restaurants, retail and a renovated public park.

Last summer, the Roosevelt Park celebrated its opening to the public in front of the station after a stunning $6 million renovation and expansion.
