(WWJ) The Michigan Education Department is out with new guidelines for the use of AI.

The new guidance is meant to help local school districts use artificial intelligence in classrooms responsibly. Officials say the resources are designed to help districts safely integrate AI while protecting privacy and maintaining human oversight.

The essential practices for districts to consider, include:

Keep AI purposeful and safe.

-- Protect privacy and integrity

-- Build AI literacy.

-- Maintain human oversight

-- Promote equity and accessibility

-- Support transparency and continuous improvement.

“This comprehensive guide provides Michigan school districts with structured administrative guidelines for implementing responsible AI practices across organizational roles, policy and operations,” said Dr. Delsa Chapman, deputy superintendent for the MDE Division of Assessment, School Improvement, and Systems Support. “It offers practical examples and templates to help district leaders establish clear guardrails of AI use in teaching and learning.”

The full guidance can be found on the MDE Artificial Intelligence webpage.
