(WWJ) - AAA reports that Michigan gas prices have dropped to an average of $3.95 per gallon this week, the lowest average price since April.
In Metro Detroit, that average is a bit higher at $3.99 per gallon.
WWJ's Beth Fisher spoke to Adrienne Woodland of AAA Michigan about whether the downward trend in gas prices will continue.
"Gas prices are down across the state, but we're starting to see these decreases slowed," said Woodland, "and in Metro Detroit, it is actually holding steady."
"Michigan motorists are beginning to see gas prices below $4 a gallon for the first time in over three months," said Woodland in a AAA press release. "If oil prices continue to decline, drivers will likely continue to see pump prices decrease."
Woodland cautioned that gas prices could go back up if crude oil prices change, though.
"We are seeing an increase in demand for gasoline and a decrease in stock," Woodland told WWJ, "and that's why you're seeing some of these decreases really slowing in some areas across the state."
The current Michigan average is 77 cents lower than this time in July but 69 cents higher than this time last year. Drivers are spending approximately $59 for a full 15-gallon tank of gas - up about $8 from last year's highest price.
According to AAA, the most expesive gas prices of the week are in Traverse City ($4.27), Marquette ($4.12) and Ann Arbor ($4.09).
The least expensive places to find gas are Flint ($3.82), Benton Harbor ($3.86) and Grand Rapids ($3.87).
AAA has several suggestions for drivers trying to save on gas, including combining errands to limit drive time, shopping around for the best deal, paying cash, and enrolling in savings programs.
To improve overall gas mileage, AAA suggests removing unnecessary weight from your vehicle and avoiding frequent acceleration and speeding.
