ALPENA (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man is in trouble with the law for stealing bottle returns from the back of a Dollar General store.

Michigan State Police officials say troopers from the Alpena Post were called to the Dollar General on US-23 in Alpena Township last Friday shortly before 7:30 p.m. after the alleged theft.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Dustin Gougeon of Alpena, came in the back door of the store and grabbed four plastic bags full of bottle returns. Michigan cans and bottles carry a $0.10 refundable deposit.

Officials didn’t say how many bottles were estimated to be in the bags.

The trooper who responded to the scene recognized Gougeon, who was caught on surveillance cameras.

Gougeon was later seen walking in the area, no longer in possession of the bottle returns, according to MSP.

He was arrested and held in the Alpena County Jail. It was not immediately clear if Gougeon had cashed in the bottle returns.

Gougeon was arraigned in the 88th District Court in Alpena on one count larceny from a building and given a $5,000 10% cash/surety bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 22.
