Michigan reports more than 44,000 new cases of COVID-19 as omicron surge continues

LANSING, Mich. (WWJ) – Michigan health officials on Monday reported 44,524 new cases of COVID-19, an average of about 14,800 cases over the last three days.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also reported 56 virus-related deaths on Monday, bringing the state’s pandemic death toll to 27,878. The total number of positive cases since March 2020 is 1,681,135.

Last Friday MDHHS announced more than 40,500 new cases for a daily average above 20,300 -- a new pandemic record for the state as the omicron variant surges across the country.

Testing across the state also increased over the weekend, with about 50,000 to 60,000 diagnostic tests per day during that time frame. The state’s case positivity rate is above 30%.

There are more adults in Michigan hospitals than at any other time during the pandemic, with 4,901 currently hospitalized according to MDHHS.

MDHHS says about 63% of Michiganders have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and health officials are encouraging the unvaccinated to receive their shots.

The federal government granted Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's request for additional staffing assistance at a fifth Michigan hospital. A Civilian Disaster Medical Assistance Team will provide support for at least the next 14 days at Henry Ford Hospital in Wyandotte as COVID-19 cases surge.
