KALAMAZOO (WWJ) -- Police say several horses that got loose, causing a traffic jam on a Michigan highway, are back home safe.

This happened Wednesday, March 5, along M-6 near the Kalamazoo ramp, according to Michigan state Police.

MSP joked on social media that troopers from the Grand Rapids post weren't "horsing around this morning" — while alerting the public to a traffic issue caused by some horses that had escaped from their home in Byron Township.

"Please use caution and find an alternate route to avoid backups. Giddy-up!," the MSP Sixth District said.

The first calls came in around 7:30 a.m., after the horses somehow escaped from a boarding facility, in the area of Wilson Avenue and 76th Street, according to reports.

Troopers who responded to the scene worked to wrangle the equine, catching them all along the highway, all the way to 131 near Hanna Lake.

While MSP only said there were "several horses," reports estimated as many as 15. Authorities have not confirmed any specific number.

MSP said the horses owners were getting a trailer to bring them home.

A couple of hours later, MSP put out an update saying all the horses had been caught, were OK, and were safely back home — sharing a photo of a troopers posing with a smaller horse he they nicknamed "Durango."

MSP added, "Great job to all first responders involved!"
