(WWJ) — A 16-year-old boy has died after crashing his car while fleeing police Tuesday night in Barry County.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Wayland Post are investigating the crash, which happened on Coats Road, west of M-66 in Castleton Township, about 25 miles north of Battle Creek.

A Barry County sheriff's deputy tried to stop the teen's car for speeding, but the driver did not stop and a police pursuit, MSP officials said.

During the chase, officials say the teen's car went off the road and crashed into multiple trees at a high rate of speed. Officials did not provide an estimate of how fast he was going.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and taken to the hospital for advanced care, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have not released the driver's name, but said he is from the Woodland, Mich., area, just north of where the crash happened.

It is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved or if the teen was wearing his seatbelt at the time.

Multiple police agencies assisted at the scene.
