(WWJ) While Michigan was a key battleground state in the 2024 Presidential Election, the state’s 13 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives were also up for grabs on Tuesday.
As of Wednesday morning: Michigan has two new members of Congress.
The numbers show Republican Tom Barrett beat former state lawmaker Curtis Hertel in the 7th Congressional District, which is the seat Elissa Slotkin is vacating to run for U.S. Senate.
In the 8th District, which includes Flint and Saginaw, current Democratic State Senator Karen McDonald-Rivet beat Paul Junge to win a two-year term.
In the four districts that cover the majority of Metro Detroit, it was mostly incumbents who held onto their seats.
Republican John James will serve another two years after beating former Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga in District 10 — covering Macomb County and parts of Oakland County.
In his concession statement. Marlinga said: "While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, I am incredibly grateful for the support and dedication of the people who stood by me throughout this campaign. This race was about more than just a seat in Congress—it was about standing up for our shared values. We ran to protect Social Security and Medicare, defend reproductive rights, and ensure that every voice in this district was heard. Though we didn’t win, the fight for these issues continues. I will always remain committed to advocating for the working families of Michigan’s 10th District. We may not have won the race, but our vision for a fairer, stronger future for all Michiganders remains as strong as ever."
Incumbent Democrats Debbie Dingell (District 6), Haley Stevens (District 11), Rashida Tlaib (District 12) and Shri Thanedar (District 13) all won fairly comfortably.
Republican Lisa McClain won District 9, which covers most of the Thumb region.
Republicans had largely won races on the west side of the state, aside from Democrat Hillary Scholten, who won District 3, covering much of the Grand Rapids area.
