(WWJ) — An Upper Peninsula woman has died and two other people are hospitalized after crashing into a parked pickup truck while trying to pass an ambulance.
The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. Monday in Wells Township, just west of Escanaba, according to Michigan State Police.
MSP officials say an ambulance was headed west on US-2/41 with its emergency lights and sirens on when a speeding Chevy Silverado tried to pass it.
The truck, driven by a 35-year-old woman from Wells, slammed into a parked Dodge Ram that was on the shoulder, yielding for the emergency vehicle, according to MSP officials.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and passenger of the Ram were taken to the hospital with severe injuries, MSP officials said.
Reckless driving and failure to yield for an emergency vehicle are factors in the crash, officials said.
Troopers were assisted on scene by Escanaba Public Safety Police and Fire, Delta County Sheriff's Office, Delta County Victims Service Unit, and Rampart EMS.
