Mid-Michigan cop, bystander rush to rescue 4 senior citizens from raging car fire on US-10 ramp

A Midland police officer, along with the help of a bystander, jumped into action on Wednesday and pulled four people to safety after they became trapped in a burning vehicle on U.S. 10.

MIDLAND (WWJ) - A Midland police officer, along with the help of a bystander, jumped into action on Wednesday and pulled four people to safety after they became trapped in a burning vehicle on U.S. 10.

The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 29 with a Midland Police Department officer dispatched to westbound U.S. 10 off-ramp to Bay City Road on repots of a vehicle crash, as reported by Mlive.

The officer got to the scene and a found a vehicle on fire. One occupant managed to escape, but three other people -- identified as senior citizens -- were trapped in the burning car.

The officer rushed to help those inside and with the assistance of a 42-year-old civilian, they both extracted the other three victims.

The fire was put out by a Midland firefighter who arrived at the scene shortly afterward.

All four occupants are Lake residents, identified as an 86-year-old man, 85-year-old woman, 79-year-old man, and 78-year-old woman. The victims along with the officer and bystander received medical attention from MyMichigan EMS personnel with the four occupants transported to a local hospital for further medical care related to smoke inhalation.

No other injuries were reported.

The police officer and civilian later sought additional medical care at an emergency clinic on their own, MLive reported. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
